Junior High Curriculum

The AVCS grades 7 and 8 are structured to provide a firm academic foundation required to successfully tackle the challenges of college preparatory senior high. There are also opportunities for students to participate in events sponsored by the Associated Christian Schools International (ACSI) including creative writing, public speaking, spelling bee, music, and dramatic presentations.

SEVENTH GRADE

  • English: Grammar, vocabulary building, spelling, and poetry Writing skills include, outlining, summarizing, developing a thesis, research papers, MLA format.
  • Math: Jr. High math is an individualized program to strengthen skills in fractions, decimals, factoring, ratios, proportions, percent, graphs, powers and roots. Pre-Algebra is honors level for those students with strong skills. Course introduces basic algebraic functions and concepts and prepares for High School Algebra
  • History: World History, creation through the Renaissance and introduction to parliamentary government
  • Science: three kingdoms, forestry, farming, electricity, electronics, magnetism and the laws of the physical universe
  • Study Skills- preparing for Junior High, this one semester class focuses on note taking skills, writing research papers, MLA Format, literary analysis, and skills needed for success in Junior High
  • P.E. Fundamentals of sports including, Football, Soccer, Basketball, Tennis, Softball, Track and Aerobics.
  • Basic Art, a one semester introduction to drawing, perception and types of art, including art history.
  • Bible – Daring Defenders, a study in Old Testament Heroes

EIGHTH GRADE

  • English: Continued development of writing skills through instruction on different writing styles, paragraph structure, and practice through numerous writing assignments, vocabulary, spelling and grammar.
  • Math: Pre-Algebra introduces basic algebraic functions and concepts and prepares for High School Algebra. Honors students who have completed PreAlgebra are enrolled in High School Algebra I
  • U.S. History: the Reformation Era through current times, explorers, and the impact of Christian movements
  • Science: foundations in astronomy, physics, chemistry, and human biology
  • P.E. Fundamentals of sports including, Football, Soccer, Basketball, Tennis, Softball, Track and Aerobics.
  • Study Skills- Preparing for High School, this class focuses on writing research papers, MLA Format, literary analysis, note taking and skills for success
  • Bible- Survey of the Old and New Testaments.

ELECTIVES

Junior High Students have the opportunity to select one elective each semester. They may select courses in art, music, journalism, leadership, teacher’s aide or study hall.
